Fitkari vs Potassium Alum: Are They the Same?
In everyday Indian use, fitkari and potassium alum usually mean the same thing. The difference is mostly one of language: fitkari is the Hindi word, potassium alum is the specific English and chemical name.
Alum is a family, potassium alum is one member
“Alum” describes a group of double sulphate salts. Potassium alum (potassium aluminium sulphate) is the one most widely sold as fitkari. Ammonium alum is another type, and some crystal deodorants use it. Both are sold as clear crystals, which is why they can look alike.
Why the label matters
If a product only says “fitkari” or “alum”, it may not tell you which alum is inside. A clear ingredient list that names potassium alum is more transparent. Vibe Fresh lists its ingredients plainly: distilled water, potassium alum and Euxyl PE 9010, a cosmetic preservative.
What potassium alum contains
Potassium alum is a mineral salt made of potassium, aluminium, sulphate and water of crystallisation. It does contain aluminium in this salt form, so it is not an “aluminium-free” ingredient. It is also different from the aluminium compounds used in many antiperspirants, which are designed to reduce sweat. Fitkari-based deodorants are for odour, not for stopping sweat.
Which is better for deodorant use?
For underarm odour, people choose fitkari or potassium alum because it is a simple, familiar mineral. The format is the bigger everyday difference: stone, powder or spray. See stone vs spray for a fair comparison.
